Reviews

Good locatioin. Easy access to Dartmouth and surrounding towns. Good beach within minutes although not for dogs. Torcross further along the coast is a great safe beach to let your dogs off. The accommodation is clean warm and tidy with a little garden out the back. Mrs W, Bridgewater, Somerset 30 October 2010
We would recommend this well designed and comfortable holiday cottage, everything was provided to make this property ideal. Mr T, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire 23 May 2010

Historically a major naval port, particularly in Tudor times, the town of Dartmouth sits on the east side of the Dart estuary, opposite Kingswear, in the South Hams district of Devon. With a backdrop of rolling hills and beautiful view of the river upstream Dartmouth is set within a landscape which has justly been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The town itself is full of interest with narrow lanes and many historic listed buildings and shops of Elizabethan and medieval character. The famous Butterwalk, which is now the location for Dartmouth Museum, has a line of granite columns supporting the carved wooden fascias of the buildings above. Sadly, the town was struck by a fire in 2010 which damaged a number of listed buildings in Fairfax Place and Higher Street.
Dartmouth’s naval origins are evident to this day in the college which sits above the outskirts of the town at which all of the Royal Navy’s officers are trained. The town has proved popular with some famous residents over the years including Agatha Christie who had a house along the river bank (which any good river cruise will surely point out!) and Flora Thompson, the author of Lark Rise to Candleford.
Transport is well catered for, with bus and road access, as well as a heritage steam railway which brings in many vistors from Paington to the estuary station across the river at Kingswear. Several regular ferrys operate across the river to transport visitors to and from Dartmouth itself. With a good range of restaurants and holiday accommodation, including many cottages searchable on Go2, Dartmouth has a lot to offer and is an essential visit on any south Devon holiday.
